SETTING THE SCENE
- Debra creeps down the cold cracking cement steps leading to Batista’s beach front restaurant basement.
- Dexter stationed in a room lined with plastic sheets, draped from ceiling to floor, Batista laying on a center table semiconscious, the haze of florescent lights form a halo over Dexter’s crown.
- Batista, wrapped up like a porcelain doll in plastic cling-film, head chest and feet secured tightly to the table, how did it come to this?
- Dexter’s Dark Passenger has taken over; all sense of control has been abandoned.
- The code in which he had much faith has left him with a dilemma; he can’t kill an innocent, but he also can’t get caught.
SCENE
Speaking in a hushed
voice, “Batista, where the fuck, are you!” Debra exclaimed, but with much
apprehension in her voice. Debra could see the soft glow of light bordering the
door to the basement. Debra crept slowly, firearm drawn hands clenched tightly
around the grip.
From Dexter’s position
he did not notice the door edging open. Peering through the opaque plastic
sheets, Debra knew what was before her. Batista lay groaning, disorientated and
unaware of his surroundings on a cold steel morgue like table, ready for
slaughter.
Debra: (Tearing down a plastic sheet). Dex…what the FUCK!” How can you do this to me again…
Dexter: (With a monotonous
voice). Debr…
Debra: Don’t even try to explain this Dex..
Batista had been snooping, unable to be complacent and let the death of his former fiancé Maria LaGuerta go. He could not sleep at night, tossing and turning with a constant nagging feeling. Why had LaGuerta been so dead set on investigating the Morgans? How did her investigation lead to her untimely death? LaGuerta had died in a supposed shootout between herself and Hector Estrada, a drug kingpin who had used a chainsaw to put an end to Laura Moser’s (Dexter’s birth mother’s) plans of being an informant against his empire.
Batista’s enquiries had led him to discover security footage of Debra, conspicuously buying gasoline, minutes before a church was set ablaze leaving a supposed serial murderer burned alive. It was the trail which LaGuerta had been on, and which led her to discover Dexter’s secret. Dexter had left a trail of unsolved serial killer murders in his wake. It was something which had affected LaGuerta on a personal level.
Batista groaned and
winced. “Debra,” he cried.
Dexter: I’m sorry sis,
it’s either him or us.
Harry’s image appeared
before Dexter, Harry had taught Dexter his code, the first rule being Never Get
Caught, the second being Never Kill an Innocent. After Harry had taken Dexter
in, he knew something was different about him. Dexter developed a desire for
blood and lacked any emotion or remorse for his actions. Harry’s code had been
developed to allow Dexter to keep his dark passenger at bay whilst fulfilling
his need for blood.
Harry: I never wanted it
to come to this Dexter, you have put Debra in a very difficult position, but
you have to do whatever it is that you need to, to protect each other from
danger.
Dexter: I know Harry, I
know.
Debra: Dex, Christ! What
are you staring at. What the fuck are we going to do about this?
Dexter: Debra… He knows
what I am. And now he knows that you know my secret.
Batista could hear the
sound of Debra’s voice, he felt a sense of relief knowing that she had found
them, but at the same time he knew his fate was not certain. Batista felt like
a father figure to Debra, and had felt that he had a close friendship with
Dexter. But he, like LaGuerta, had an overwhelming sense of what is just, and
what he must do as an officer of the law.
Batista: (Straining
his forehead against the plastic wrapped around him and towards the direction
of Debra’s voice). Deb, Do the right thing. Don’t let this go on.
Debra: Batista, Fuck,
You don’t understand. I fucking killed LaGuerta! It was me, not
Dex.
Batista had not come to
the conclusion that Debra had been an active participant in Dexter’s escapades.
He closed his eyes and sighed. He knew now that his last breath was indeed sure
to come.
Batista: Just fucking
get it over with.
Dexter turned, and with
a sinister smile he nodded to Debra. He raised his blade, and with one clean,
powerful thrust his blade sliced deep into Batista’s chest. Debra could not
watch as Batista expelled his last breath. She sank to the floor, weeping over
the loss of another close friend.
Debra felt as if she had
no reason left to live. Like her father she could not cope with the monster
that she had had a hand in creating. Harry had taken his life after walking in
on Dexter after his first kill. He could not live with himself and neither
could Debra. Debra wanted to do what Harry could not. She felt as if she had to
rid the world of Dexter and his dark passenger. Coming to this realisation, she
raised her pistol aiming squarely at Dexter’s chest.
Debra: (With tears
flowing down her cheeks and a sheepish voice). I’m sorry Dexter. This has
come too far. I can’t live with this.
Dexter: Deb…
Bursting through a
ground level window, Joey Quinn scrambled to stand upright, astonished at the
scene he had found himself in. His Lieutenant lying dead on a table,
wrapped in plastic, with a handle of a blade sticking out of his chest. Taking
in the environment he pointed his gun at Dexter.
Dexter stared like a
possum paralysed by the beam of a bright light. Debra fired. Joey fell to his
knees.
Debra: (Sobbing). Dexter I fucking love you!
Two more shots were
fired…
Three members and one ex-member
of the Miami-Metro Police Dept. lay slumped in the basement of a restaurant
owned by one Angelo Juan Marcos Batista.

Thank you Frank,
DeleteI will go through it more thoroughly during class.
How about the single picture, is there enough description to let the reader come up with the images of the other characters on their own?
Good story, although a lot of swearing... perhaps you could tone this down a bit. I am also unaware of Dexter Morgan and his adventures -I think more pictures would be a good idea.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the feed-back.
DeleteI am trying to keep this in the same tone as the TV Show. Debra's character likes to use expletives.
I think u've done a good job, good story telling. You should add some more pictures to make your fanfic more visually attractive :)
ReplyDeleteI have added more pictures. Thanks for the idea.
